We had the opportunity to work with Försäkringskassan. They primarily wanted our help to ensure that information targeting logged-in parents and expecting parents was available and clear.
Försäkringskassan asked us to focus on their users' actual needs based on a needs analysis they provided. The needs analysis included; who's turn it is to VAB (be home taking care of your sick child), how to maximize your time on parental leave and how to make sure you apply correctly regarding which child you will apply for when it comes to both parental benefit and VAB. The design challenge from Försäkringskassan was:
"How can information regarding föräldrapenningdagar and VAB- days be presented to logged-in parents and expecting parents?"
To gather insights from users, we conducted both quantitative and qualitative interviews. We created an online survey for the quantitative interviews to get an overview of general data and identify areas of improvement. The survey received 60 responses from parents or expecting parents. For more empathy-based insights, we conducted nine quantitative interviews based on the insights from our online survey.
After analyzing the results of our research, we landed on three key hypotheses.
In Figma, we divided the design flow for VAB and parental benefit into two different flows for easier management.
Here are some elements and functions from our idea-generating sessions;
At this stage in prototyping, we didn't prioritize colors or layout much but focused more on creating a user-friendly and functional design.
We did extensive testing to see weather our work hypothesis and design actually performed for the users. We conducted two user-tests on our prototype, and each round of testing was an effective way for us to fine-tune the solutions we designed.
As for users, we tried to find a balanced group of expecting parents and parents. We found several parents to test our prototype, yet only one expecting parent.
Fortunately, most of our users' children were young enough for the parents to remember their time as expecting parents and what it was like using Försäkingskassan's services.
After three design iterations and two bouts of user testing, we finished our high-fidelity prototype. Our final design solution is a comprehensive restructuring of existing information with new functionality and ideas on how Försäkringskassan could improve its services related to parental benefits and VAB.
Representatives from Försäkringskassan were very pleased with the design we provided, and we believe our concept will have a positive effect on Försäkringskassan's user-friendliness.
